Synopsis of Rising From Ashes: My Masked Runway Comeback
Chapter 1
Honora Hess pressed her bleeding arm against the cold wall of the emergency corridor and watched the elevator doors.
Her vision blurred at the edges. The fluorescent lights above hummed too loud, or maybe that was just the blood rushing in her ears. She counted the seconds between each breath, trying to keep her stomach from climbing up her throat. The gash on her forearm had soaked through the makeshift bandage the triage nurse had tied twenty minutes ago. Crimson seeped between her fingers, warm and sticky, dripping onto the linoleum floor.
She didn't look down. She kept her eyes on those silver elevator doors.
He would come. He had to come. She had sent the text from the ambulance, thumb slipping on the screen, typing his name three times before the autocorrect caught it. Emergency. St. Catherine's. Bleeding.
Three years of marriage. Three years of being his shadow, his scheduler, his convenient wife at charity galas. Surely that earned her something. Surely he would walk through those doors and his face would crack open with worry, and his hands-those long, elegant hands that signed billion-dollar contracts-would reach for her.

Efford Thornton stepped out in a charcoal Tom Ford suit that cost more than most people's monthly rent. His black overcoat swung behind him, unbuttoned, revealing the crisp white shirt underneath. "Efford-"
He walked past her.
His gaze traveled over her shoulder, through her, as if she were a piece of furniture he had already catalogued and dismissed. He didn't slow. He didn't pause. His shoes-Italian leather, she knew the maker, she had ordered them for him-clicked against the floor in a rhythm that matched her accelerating heartbeat.
She stood frozen, arm still extended, fingers curling into empty air.
He stopped at the nurses' station. "VIP wing," he said. His voice carried that particular tone he used in boardrooms, the one that expected immediate compliance. "Aletha Chase. Which room?"
The nurse behind the desk stammered something about the fourth floor.
Honora's arm dropped to her side. Blood dripped from her fingertips, landing in small, dark spots on the floor. She watched her husband's profile-the sharp line of his jaw, the dark hair she had run her fingers through a thousand mornings-turn toward the bank of elevators at the corridor's far end.
"Excuse me." The doctor's voice came from her left, urgent, clipped. "I need to get through."
Dr. Chen. She remembered his name from the triage paperwork. He was young, maybe thirty, with dark circles under his eyes that suggested he had been on shift too long. In his hands, he
