Love Beyond the Lies
Synopsis of Love Beyond the Lies
Chapter 1
The leather seat of Rex's luxury car felt cold beneath me despite the warmth of the evening. I smoothed down the front of my emerald gown, the fabric hugging my curves in all the right places. Tonight was supposed to be special. Tonight was supposed to change everything.
I reached down, adjusting the lace trim of the midnight blue lingerie set I'd purchased specifically for this occasion. The silk was impossibly soft against my skin, the design intricate and delicate—the twenty-fourth piece Rex had ever complimented.
"You look stunning tonight," Rex said, his eyes briefly leaving the road to glance at me. His smile was practiced perfection, the same one that had melted my defenses two years ago.
"Thank you," I replied, my fingers still lingering on the lace. "I wanted to look perfect for your company gala."
He reached across the console, his hand finding mine. "You always do, Layne."
The familiar warmth of his touch sent a flutter through my stomach. Two years of this—of believing I was loved, of thinking I was special to him. I glanced at the small velvet box tucked into my purse, a gift I'd purchased for him. Inside was a custom watch, engraved with our initials and the date we met.
"Are you nervous about tonight?" I asked, trying to gauge his reaction.
"Just business as usual," he shrugged, his thumb tracing circles on my wrist. "A few speeches, some networking. You know how these things go."
I nodded, though something in his tone felt off. Rex had been hinting at a proposal for months now. Little comments about our future, about taking the next step, about how he couldn't imagine his life without me. Tonight felt different—important.
His phone rang suddenly, the sound echoing through the car's speakers. Rex frowned at the screen.
"I need to take this," he said, tapping the Bluetooth button. "Thompson speaking."
I settled back into my seat, watching the city lights blur past the window as he conducted his business call. The conversation was mundane until a familiar name caught my attention.
"Vienna's been asking about the progress," Rex said, his voice dropping slightly. "She's eager to see it all come together."
My breath caught. Vienna Harris—the woman whose scandal I'd uncovered two years ago when I was working as security chief at the lingerie factory. The woman who'd been caught with another man in the warehouse, leading to a fire that destroyed half the inventory.
"What's taking so long?" a male voice responded through the speaker. "You've been stringing this along for two years now."
"Patience," Rex replied, his tone shifting subtly. "The longer I drag it out, the more invested she becomes. The fall will be that much harder."
"And you're sure she has no idea?"
"None whatsoever," Rex laughed, a sound I'd never heard from him before—cold and calculating. "She actually thinks I love her. Can you believe it? The woman who destroyed Vienna's reputation is sitting here planning our wedding."
