Chapter 3

The Howling Moon pulsed with energy—strobe lights cutting through darkness, music vibrating through my bones as I nursed my second drink. Three hours had passed since I'd fled the pack house, and the numbness was finally giving way to something else. Something that felt dangerously like freedom.

I didn't belong here. Lunas didn't sneak out to neutral territory bars. Lunas didn't sit alone in corners, watching strangers dance while their mates—

"Don't think about him," I whispered to myself, taking another sip.

The bartender slid another drink toward me. "On the house," he said with a nod toward the far end of the bar.

I turned, following his gaze.

My breath caught.

A man stood in the shadows, tall and broad-shouldered. His dark hair fell across his forehead in a way that spoke of careless elegance rather than the calculated precision of Dexter's appearance. But it was his eyes that held me frozen—golden amber that seemed to glow even in the dim light.

He moved toward me with the fluid grace of an Alpha, his presence commanding attention without effort. Unlike Dexter's domineering aura that demanded submission, this man's power felt like a warm current pulling me toward him.

"Caroline," he said, my name on his lips like a prayer.

My glass slipped from my fingers, shattering on the floor. "How do you know my name?"

He smiled—a slow, gentle curve of his mouth that reached his eyes. "I'm Leo Wilson. Alpha of Nightfall Pack."

The name hit me like a physical blow. Nightfall. Our neighboring territory. I'd seen him at inter-pack gatherings before, though we'd never spoken.

"May I?" He gestured to the seat across from me.

I should have said no. I should have left. Instead, I nodded.

As he sat, his scent washed over me—pine and rain, wild and clean. My wolf surged forward so violently I gasped.

*MATE.*

The word echoed through my consciousness with such force that Sarah howled within me, clawing to get closer to him.

"That's impossible," I whispered, my hand flying to my Luna marking. "I already have a mate."

Leo's eyes dropped to my neck, his expression softening. "A false bond," he said quietly. "One that never should have been."

The electricity between us crackled like lightning. His fingers brushed mine across the table, and I jerked back at the contact.

"I'm sorry," he said, though he didn't look sorry at all. "I've waited a long time to meet you properly."

"Waited?" Confusion clouded my thoughts as Sarah continued to circle restlessly within me.

"I felt it the first time I caught your scent," Leo said, his voice dropping lower. "Three years ago at the Winter Solstice gathering. You were standing by the fire, and your tears fell into the flames."

My heart stuttered. I remembered that night—Dexter had missed Emma's first full moon ceremony to attend "urgent pack business."

"I didn't understand why you were crying," Leo continued, his eyes never leaving mine. "Until I realized who you were. Who you were bonded to."

A strange warmth bloomed in my chest as his presence wrapped around me like a physical touch.

"You've been watching me?" The question came out breathless.

"From afar." His honesty was disarming. "I respected the mate mark on your neck, even though my wolf knew better."

"Your wolf knew what?"

"That you're my true mate." The words hung between us, impossible and undeniable at once. "The one chosen for me by the Moon Goddess herself."

I shook my head, though Sarah was howling in agreement. "No. That's not possible. I'm already—"

"Trapped in a false bond," Leo finished gently. "One that's causing you pain."

I stared at him, this stranger who somehow knew me better than my own mate did. "How could you possibly know that?"

His eyes glowed brighter, and I felt a gentle pressure against my consciousness—a mind-link forming without my permission.

*I've been there,* his voice whispered in my mind. *Watching. Waiting. Knowing you were suffering while respecting the laws of our kind.*

The intimacy of the connection stole my breath. I'd never felt anything like this with Dexter—this warm, golden thread connecting our thoughts.

*You're really feeling this too?* I asked through our developing link, unable to hide my disbelief.

Leo's smile deepened, creating a dimple in his right cheek that was unexpectedly charming. *I've felt it for years, Caroline. Every time our packs gathered. Every time I saw you standing beside him, looking sad while trying to smile.*

"How is this possible?" I whispered aloud, my fingers trembling on the table.

"The Moon Goddess has her reasons," Leo said softly. "Perhaps she was waiting until you were ready to see the truth."

The truth. That the bond I'd cherished for a decade was nothing but a convenient arrangement. That while I'd been faithful and devoted, Dexter had been searching for something—someone—else.

And now, when I'd finally found the courage to reject that false bond, the Moon Goddess had thrown this Alpha into my path.

An Alpha who looked at me like I was the answer to every prayer he'd ever made.

An Alpha who was everything Dexter wasn't.
