Betrayal in the Moonlight
Synopsis of Betrayal in the Moonlight
Chapter 1
I stood frozen among the gathered pack members, my heart hammering against my ribs as my father's words echoed through the grand council hall.
"The union between my daughter, Aria, and our future Alpha Kai will strengthen the Moonstone Pack and secure our bloodlines for generations to come."
The announcement hit me like a physical blow. My fingers trembled at my sides as I forced myself to maintain composure, feeling dozens of eyes boring into me. Some gazes held surprise, others calculation, but none matched the shock coursing through my own body.
Kai. My arranged mate was *Kai*.
I dared a glance toward him where he stood tall and imposing at the front of the hall. His face revealed nothing—no joy, no displeasure, just the same stoic mask he always wore. The same expression he'd had years ago when we trained together, when I'd first felt my heart stutter in his presence, when I'd first realized I loved someone who would never see me.
My wolf, Nora, stirred anxiously within me. *This can't be real*, she whimpered. *He's meant for Madison, not us*.
I silently agreed. Everyone knew my cousin was everything I wasn't—beautiful, confident, early-blooming. Her wolf had emerged at thirteen, while mine had shamefully waited until I was nearly seventeen. Madison was worthy of an Alpha. I was... just me.
"This alliance will be formalized at the next full moon," my father continued, his Beta voice carrying authority through the hall. I noticed how his chest puffed slightly with pride. This was his moment of triumph—securing his position through his daughter.
The rest of the council meeting passed in a blur. I nodded when appropriate, smiled when necessary, and somehow made it back to my chambers without collapsing. Once alone, I sank onto my bed, wrapping my arms around myself.
"Why would he agree to this?" I whispered to Nora. "He doesn't even see me."
*Political reasons*, Nora suggested sadly. *You're the Beta's daughter. It makes sense.*
A soft knock interrupted my thoughts, followed by the unmistakable pressure of an Alpha's aura seeping through the door. My breath caught as the wood creaked open without my permission.
Kai filled the doorframe, his broad shoulders and commanding presence making my modest room feel suddenly small. His dark eyes found mine immediately, and something flickered across his face—too quick to identify.
"Aria," he said, my name sounding different in his deep voice.
"Alpha," I responded automatically, lowering my gaze as was proper.
"Just Kai," he corrected, stepping inside and closing the door. "We should talk about our... arrangement."
The way he hesitated made my stomach twist. I nodded, unable to find words.
"The mating is necessary," he stated flatly. "Your father's position has been challenged, and this alliance will secure the pack's stability."
"I understand," I managed, though my heart was cracking. Just business, then. Nothing more.
"There's something else." Kai moved closer, his scent—pine and midnight air—wrapping around me. "We are true mates."
My head snapped up. "What?"
"I've
