Chapter 3

Dawn painted the sky in hues of amber and gold as I made my way to the Alpha hall, my steps purposeful despite the heaviness in my chest. Emma was still asleep in my father's quarters, exhausted from crying herself to sleep. The memory of her confusion—her innocent question that had shattered my world—fueled the fire burning inside me.

Luna paced restlessly beneath my skin. *Justice*, she demanded. *We need justice.*

I found my father standing at the great window overlooking the pack grounds, his powerful silhouette rimmed in morning light. Alpha Richard Sterling, leader of the Moonstone Pack, turned as I entered, his eyes reflecting the storm I felt within.

"Victoria," he said, his voice a low rumble. The scent of his anger—pine and thunder—filled the room.

"Father." I stood tall, refusing to let my voice break. "You've heard."

"The entire pack has heard." His massive hands clenched into fists. "My Beta. My chosen second. Using my daughter and stealing from our pack."

I placed the journal containing my findings on his desk. "It's all documented. Three years of diverted resources. Housing allowances, medical care, integration fees—all to support Sophia and their children."

My father's Alpha aura flared, pressing against the walls of the room. A lesser wolf would have cowered, but Sterling blood ran in my veins too.

"I trusted him," he growled. "We all did."

"I gave up everything for him," I whispered, the admission painful on my tongue. "My birthright. My position. My power."

My father crossed the room in three strides, his hands gripping my shoulders. "No more, Victoria. No more dimming your light for an unworthy mate."

"I want to invoke pack justice," I said, meeting his gaze. "Not just as your daughter, but as the rightful Luna I was born to be."

A fierce pride gleamed in his eyes. "The pack will stand with you. I will stand with you."

Luna howled her approval inside me, the sound echoing through my soul like a battle cry.

I felt Marcus before I saw him, the corrupted mate bond between us tugging painfully as he approached our home. I stood at the border of our territory, refusing to retreat into the house that had witnessed my humiliation.

"Victoria." His voice was cold, businesslike. The man who had once whispered love against my skin now regarded me as an inconvenience to be dealt with.

"Marcus." I kept my voice steady, though Luna snarled and clawed beneath my skin.

He thrust a document toward me. "I need you to sign this. A formal rejection of our mate bond."

The paper trembled in his hand—the only sign that this moment affected him at all. I stared at it, this official dissolution of what I had once believed sacred.

"Sophia is who I choose," he continued, his voice hardening into what he thought was a Beta tone. It rang hollow now, stripped of the authority my bloodline had lent him. "This is the simplest way forward for everyone."

"Simplest for you, you mean." My words were ice. "After you've stolen from the pack. After you've made a mockery of our bond."

"Don't be dramatic." He stepped closer, impatience flickering across his face. "Sign it, Victoria. You know this is over."

Something snapped inside me—the final thread of restraint I'd clung to. Luna surged forward, and I let her come. The shift rippled through me, bones cracking, muscles reforming. Where I had stood, a towering silver-white wolf now snarled, clawed paws tearing the earth beneath us.

Marcus stumbled backward, fear spiking in his scent. He had forgotten what I was—what blood ran in my veins. His wolf should have answered mine, should have shifted to meet the challenge, but he remained human, cowering before my true form.

"Victoria—" he gasped, the paper falling forgotten from his hand.

I advanced one step, my wolf's growl vibrating through the clearing. Marcus retreated, his face pale with the realization that I was not the submissive mate he had molded.

The monthly pack gathering hummed with tension. Whispers followed me as I took my place beside my father, Emma's small hand clutched in mine. I had dressed with care—not in the modest clothes Marcus had preferred, but in a silver dress that matched my wolf's coat, my Sterling bloodline on display for all to see.

My father had just begun the traditional pack blessing when the doors swung open. Sophia Blake strode in, her head high, a small boy—the one Emma had recognized—clutched to her side. Marcus followed, his face a mask of defiance that couldn't quite hide his unease.

"Alpha Sterling," Sophia called, her voice cutting through the silence. "I believe introductions are overdue."

The pack collectively held its breath. My father's aura darkened dangerously.

"Marcus and I have a son," she declared, lifting the child higher as if he were a trophy. "And soon, we will have our own place in this pack."

Murmurs rippled through the gathered wolves. Some faces showed shock, others disgust. A few—those loyal to Marcus—looked away in shame.

I felt Emma's hand tighten in mine. My daughter looked up at me, confusion and hurt in her eyes that mirrored my own. But where she saw only the shattering of her family, I saw something else forming in the wreckage—the chance to reclaim what was rightfully mine.

Luna's voice was clear and strong within me: *Show them who we really are.*
