Chapter 82
Millicent's POV
Things did not get any better in terms of my relationship with Christopher. He treated me like a polite stranger would another and it was slowly killing me. Especially when he would smile sweetly at Wendy and give some little affectionate touches.
Once my eyes made contact with Sylvester and I could see the pity in his eyes. It was just too much, I ran out of the room to my own and slammed the door.
Samantha was on my heels. 'Millicent pull yourself together! If your mate bond is as strong as you claimed, he will soon remember you and come crawling back into your arms and your bed!' she said, hoping to bring a smile to my lips but I was not so sure anymore.
'Wendy is weaving her magic around him and he seem to want to be with only her. I can't wait to see her gone from the Moon Ville Pack and out of our lives permanently!' I exclaimed.
'I wish I could say that she is just helping him recover', Samantha said slowly. 'but I have seen the way she looks at him and from the scratches of information I've heard, it seems they have met before, when he was at the borders and they were more than just friends'.
'But if he can remember her, then why can't he remember me?' I wailed. 'We met recently and he's supposed to recall the most recent events, isn't he?'
'It depends. The mind is a funny organ. It selects the memory it wishes to remember and the one it wishes not to', Samantha said and when she saw the distress on my features, hastened to add, 'Not that I am saying he has regained his memory of course or that he has forgotten you permanently'. Then she said as an afterthought, 'I feel that Wendy is trying to make Christopher fall in love with her. I hope that by the time he regains his memory, it will not be too late for you and he to get back together. Because if he falls in love with her before he recovers, there will be complications...'
' Don't you think I know that?' I wailed. I am powerless and it is killing me to see another woman taking my mate away from me, right under my nose! What do you suggest I do?' I asked, feeling desperate.
'Try doing any of those things you did in the past that made you unique to Christopher. It might help jog his memory. You have to be smart!'
'But she said it could be detrimental to his health, trying to jog his memory, that is!' I whispered.
'Detrimental my foot!' Samantha swore. 'I feel she said that to have more time to get Christopher to fall in love with her. Is she not doing the same with Christopher? Reminding him of their past? How she saved him previously? You said so yourself that you heard her saying that to Christopher. What other evidence do you need that she is not what she appears to be? Though, I must tell you, she is a dangerous person! I sense evil in her!'
Sigh!
I placed my hands on my laps, wringing them like I was squeezing water from a cloth. I did that whenever I was confused or nervous and right now, I was very confused.
We were still deliberating on the next course of action when I got a letter.
Who could possibly wrote to me? I thought, as I tore open the envelope.
It was from Raph. What a welcome surprise. It read....
'Dear Millicent,
I hope this letter meets you well. The news of how the battle against the Moon Ville Pack ended has reached us.
I hope you were not wounded in any way? The talk of your bravery has been ringing on everyone's lips.
Mummy Cara sends her greetings and says to remind you that there are things you still need to know about your past and possibly your present as well, whatever that is!
Hugh and baby send their love and aunt Mildred said to say hi!
I have a lot to tell you as well. You were right about something you told me in the past.
Hoping to see you soon, sweetheart,
Raph.
How could I have forgotten to visit them since the war ended?
'Who is it from? Samantha asked.
'From some friends in the Moonlight pack. They are wondering why I have not visited them yet'.
'But you cannot blame yourself for that, nor allow anyone else to, for that matter. Things have been pretty rough down here since then!' Samantha said.
'They are not blaming, just reminding me and you know what? They are right. I need to go see them. There are alot of things that I need to find out!'
'Are you sure this is a good time to visit them? I mean when a strange witch, determined to take your love from you is with him at all hours of the day?'
'What has my presence here accomplished anyways? If she wants to take him in his state, there's nothing I can do to prevent that short of forcing his memory on him and that is impossible', I said sadly. 'I am very happy, Raph thought to write. I shall visit them and find out all that I need to know about my birth pack'.
'When will you leave?' Samantha asked.
'Tomorrow morning '.
'Then I'd better prepare to go with you', she said.
'That will not be necessary!' I said emphatically. 'You shall remain here and be my ears and eyes. I shall be back very soon. But this is something I must do!'
'Aren't you afraid you might be attacked by the pack members for your part in destroying their Alpha? It is risky going there now without an escort!'
'They should be happy I relieved them off such an evil Alpha', I said. 'but you're right. I shall be careful to disguise myself because like I said, this is something I must do!'
That night, I could not sleep. Alot of thoughts crowded my mind. Was it ever going to be possible for Christopher and I to get back together? What if he never recovers his memory, or the witch sees to it the he does just for her own selfish benefit? What is this thing that I do not know about that mum Cara wanted to tell me about? Was it concerning my mates? Sylvester has been kind and considerate towards me and I know what he wants. The both of us know that it is impossible now that Christopher was awake and I hope that he accepts it like he promised, when we thought Alpha Christopher was gone forever!
I finally fell into a troubled sleep in the early hours of the morning.
Chapter 83
I got to the home of Raph and Mildred and I found Raph with a young beautiful girl.
'Millicent, you're here!' he said, hugging me. 'I didn't think you'd come this soon after receiving the letter!'
'Nothing could keep me away. Where is Mildred?' I asked, looking into the inner room.
'She is out in the fields picking fruits. I'm surprised you did not see her on your way here', Raph said.
'Aren't you going to introduce me to your friend?' I asked.
'Of course I was going to as soon as you settled down', Raph said happily. 'This is Minnie, my fated mate'.
'You don't say!' I shouted happily, hugging him and the beautiful girl by his side, one hand on each of their shoulders. They both looked so happy and I was happy for them.
'Raph, where is mum Cara?' I asked, surprised that she was not there. 'She is practicing her profession. You know she is a mid - wife?' he asked.
I nodded.
'Well, she went to deliver a female of her pup', he said. 'If all goes well and I pray it does, she should be back soon!
While waiting for Cara, Raph and I spoke at length and I told him about my birth pack and all that happened and why I couldn't tell anyone about it before now and he told me how he met Minnie.
We were still talking when Cara came back.
'Welcome, ma', I said.
'My princess!' she called, 'how have you been? The reports of your exploits precede you!'
'I am surprised. I thought no one else but Alpha Sylvester knows about it. He was the only one there when it happened!'
'Well, you are mistaken', Cara said and Raph nodded. 'I had been sceptical about inviting you here for security reasons. The wolves here might not take kindly to your presence, in their own pack, you who killed their Alpha'.
'Alpha Sylvester intimated me that he sent a message to the pack and it's Luna that if they should act rebellious in any way, they would regret it', I said. 'but I took the precaution of covering myself, masking my scent, so no one would realize it was me!'
'That's good', Cara said
'It will save my old bones the time and effort to visit you in the Moon Ville Pack!' Cara said. 'Excuse me, let me have a quick shower, then we have talk'.
While she was gone, Raph and I discussed more about the battle. He had been one of the warriors.
'Come, let's talk', Cara said, poking her head out from the room to call for me. I excused myself and went inside.
'I heard that our own Blake was responsible for the chain of events that caused Sylvester to murder your parents', she started.
I nodded. I didn't want to talk about it. 'I gave him what he deserved. 'You said there were things I didn't know about, things you will tell me after the battle!' I reminded her, without preambles.
'Yes!' she said smiling. 'You look so serious. It is not a bad news, it is a great news'.
'What is it Mum Cara?' I asked becoming impatient.
'Do you know you are pregnant?' she asked.
The blunt and sudden way she blurted it took me unawares and at first I thought I hadn't heard her right.
'Mum Cara, what did you just say?'
'I am surprised you have not found it out for yourself all this while!' she said shaking her head.
'Found what out?' I asked, my heart pounding with fear, anticipation and apprehension.
'That you are pregnant and you should be about four months gone!' she said, pulling my lower eyelid down and looking into it.
I had been feeling funny, these past days - fatigue, loss of appetite, mood swings - but I had attributed those feelings to the aftermath of the battle.
'Are you sure, Mum Cara?' I whispered, not wanting to believe so that my hopes would not be dashed.
'As sure as fire!' she replied smiling happily.
'And you did not tell me about it?' You allowed me go into battle in my delicate condition, knowing that anything could happen?' I asked incredulous.
'It was because of the battle that I withheld the information from you. I did not want you to be distracted', Cara said. 'Also, I knew that Amelia would not allow any harm befall you nor her grandchild!' she observed confidently. 'Knowing you were pregnant would have bitten the edge out of your anger and your anger was the fuel you needed for the war'.
'I'm still not happy you withheld it from me. What if I had ended up like my mother?' I asked.
'You didn't, did you?' she asked smiling. 'By the way, who is responsible?' she asked.
'Alpha Christopher!' I said, sadly.
'Good! Though now, I can understand why Alpha Sylvester invaded your pack. So I no longer have anything against him, though he should have been more patient and less impulsive!' Then looking at me thoughtfully, continued,
I heard that Alpha Christopher sacrificed his life for his brother. Such a noble deed!'
'Yes. And it nearly killed me. But he has been raised back to life by a witch friend of his called Wendy', I said sadly.
'And what is that long face for?' she asked, searchingly. 'What are you sad about if he's been brought back from the dead?'
'I do not have access to him anymore. He came back with a lost memory. He does not recognize me', I lamented. 'I am happy with this news of my Pregnancy but I can't even share the joyful news with the pup's father because of this'.
'Is this all that is making you so miserable?' she asked perceptively. 'You do not seem happy about the news of your pregnancy, don't you want it?'
'Oh, Mum Cara, I wailed. 'The witch who brought him back to life and has been caring for him is not just his friend, they seem to have shared a physical relationship in the past and it is obvious she loves him and is trying to make him fall in love with her while putting a distance between Christopher and me! You can see why I do not know how to react about the news of my Pregnancy!'
'Hmmm', Cara said, her right hand holding her jaw, seemingly deep in thought. 'You will have to fight for your love but you will not do it physically. Here's what you will do...'
Chapter 84
After telling Millicent what she was going to do to secure Christopher from the witch, she continued, 'It is guaranteed to work, I assure you. But in the impossible event that it does not, I shall introduce you to a greater witch whose potions and powers have never ceased to amaze me. Sashi will neutralize any spell she may have woven round Alpha Christopher', she emphasized. 'But you shall try the first suggestion before we go for plan B'.
'Thank you mum Cara. You are a life saver. I shall do all that you have asked me to do', I said. 'But revealing to me, my pregnancy, isn't the only thing you want to tell me, is it?' I asked curiously. 'You sounded as though there was more especially concerning my birth pack'.
'Yes', she said, her eyes shinning as she laughed happily. 'You are not going to believe this but your brother is alive!'
'Mum Cara', I snapped, not finding it funny at all. 'You don't joke with things like that!'
'I am not joking, my dear girl. Your brother is alive and you have seen him too but may not have known he was your brother!' she said.
'Really?' I asked incredulous. 'How is that possible? I saw my mum die with my own two eyes!'
'When our attackers, that's Alpha Sylvester and his men...' she started.
'Yes, yes, Yes', I prompted moving my hands impatiently, anxious for her to get to the point.
'Well, when they left, we came out of hiding to survey the damage. We found your father, our great Alpha and his Beta dead. They could not be helped', she said sadly and I felt sad as well, recalling the scene. But I was still impatient for her to tell me more about my brother.
'We found your mother, she had lost a lot of blood and was dying but there was a pulse - a very weak one. We knew she was not going to last for much longer, so we decided, that having lost you all, we could at least save the pup in her womb, the heir to carry on the lineage...
' I and some other mid wives, cut your mother open and brought out the pup. As soon as the pup was brought out, your mother heaved a heavy sigh and breathed her last', Cara said and wiped a tear from her eye. 'It was as though she had been waiting for us to save her son. I have always believed that, that sigh was a sigh of relief'.
I was sobbing quietly as I listened to the tale. It brought to my mind the futility of wars and battles.
'We thought that you had also died or that a worst fate awaited you if you were captured. And that your brother was the only surviving heir of the late Alpha Harry OHara. You can imagine my joy when you confirmed to me that you were Luna Amelia's daughter'.
'But you are yet to tell me who my brother is', I said. 'Hope he is okay? He was not deformed due to the battle and all our mother had to go through?' I asked suddenly afraid.
'No. He was born perfect. Everything in the right place. Like I said, you've seen him before and he is none other than my adopted son, Hugh!'
I was shocked. 'Hugh?' I asked.
'Yes, Hugh!' Cara said smiling and touching my shoulder gently. 'Did you not feel anything the very first time you saw him?' she asked, ' I've been told that you and he instantly connected!'
I recalled that from the start, I had felt a strange connection to Hugh and had even referred to him as the brother I'd have had. When all the while he was actually my brother, speaking and doing many things with me and I hadn't known!
I became impatient to see Hugh again and tell him, he was indeed my brother.
'And where is Hugh?' I asked, not believing that I had been there for some hours and had not asked to see Hugh like I always did. I had been so occupied with the tales of the war and Raph's mate that I forgot to ask about him.
'I believe he is playing with his baby brother in a neighbor's chambers', Cara said. ' These days, Raph has time for little else, but his job and his mate. Hugh goes off with his baby to show that he is now a big boy!' Cara laughed. 'He's so adorable!'
'About the pack', I continued, 'Is there anything that can be done? I heard that it is just like a plain ground now. Alot of Alphas, rogue and otherwise have tried to occupy it but have not been able to stay there for long and they've always had to move away, is that true?'
'It is true and I can only say that the spirit of your parents are guarding the place for Hugh Harry O'Hara to take over the throne as the rightful heir!'
'That's correct!' I conceded. 'But how are we going to go about reviving the pack?' I asked, already anxious to get to work.
'You have to take it easy. We shall take it one step at a time', Cara said, patting my shoulder and smiling at me, proudly. 'I knew you were no ordinary princess and you are going to be a great Luna'!'
It reminded me of the situation at the Moon Ville Pack and I felt sad.
'No, no', she said, making a clicking sound with her tongue on the roof of her mouth, shaking her fore finger from right to left. 'I want none of that! We do not need it!', she said sternly. 'Do what you have to do to secure your Alpha. Be confident while you're at it and leave the rest for nature and the Moon Goddess and everything will be okay'.
'Do you have any ideas though about how we can restore the pack?' I asked, making an effort to get out of my melancholic mood.
'I know a few others who like me, are from the Crescent Pack. They'll be only too happy to come back to their pack of origin. There's no place like home, you know!' she said, a far away look in her eyes and I could feel her brain cells ticking, as she plans on how to carry out the feat. 'With you as the Luna of the great Moon Ville Pack, and acting Alpha of the Crescent pack, they will all troupe back to the pack!'
'You're sure they will?' I asked. 'You're sure it will work?'
'As sure as fire!' she smiled confidently.
