Chapter 3

The Great Hall of the Moonveil estate glittered with candlelight, transforming the ancient stone walls into something from a fairy tale. Or a nightmare, depending on how you looked at it. I stood at the edge of the celebration, watching pack members mingle after the ceremony. My silver-blue eyes—no longer hidden behind colored contacts—drew curious glances from those who hadn't witnessed my transformation at the sacred circle.

"Alpha Elaina," a young wolf greeted me, bowing his head respectfully. "The elders request your presence at the head table."

I nodded, smoothing down the ceremonial robes that still whispered of my mother's presence. "Tell them I'll be there shortly."

As I moved through the crowd, conversations hushed momentarily before resuming in excited whispers. The return of the rightful Luna's daughter had shaken the pack to its core. I could feel their eyes on me—some curious, some fearful, some calculating.

That's when I saw him.

Benedict stood near the entrance, his arm casually draped around Layla's waist. My sister giggled at something he said, her hand resting possessively on his chest. The sight should have hurt, but instead, it crystallized something inside me—a cold, clear purpose.

"Elaina," Sarah appeared at my side, her voice low. "He's here."

"I see that," I replied, letting my gaze linger on the pair. "Interesting choice of companion for my sister."

Sarah's lips curved into a knowing smile. "Shall I arrange an introduction?"

"No," I said, letting my Alpha aura unfurl slightly, drawing the attention of nearby wolves. "Let's see how long it takes him to recognize me."

I moved toward the refreshment table, deliberately placing myself in Benedict's line of sight. He glanced in my direction, his eyes widening slightly at my Alpha presence, but there was no recognition—just the automatic response of a wolf sensing a superior.

"Who is that?" I heard him ask Layla, his voice carrying across the room.

"That's my sister," Layla replied, her tone dismissive. "Elaina. She's been away for years, but now she's back thinking she can take my place."

Benedict's eyes narrowed as he studied me. "She has quite the presence for someone who's been gone so long."

"She's always been dramatic," Layla said with a sniff. "Don't worry about her. Tell me more about your plans for expanding into pack territories."

I sipped my champagne, watching as Benedict launched into what was clearly a rehearsed pitch about legal services for pack businesses. The irony wasn't lost on me—he was using the very connections I'd helped him build to worm his way into my family's influence.

---

Later that night, I retreated to my private study—a room that had been sealed since my mother's exile. Sarah followed me, carrying a thick folder.

"You were right," she said, placing the folder on my desk. "He's been researching the pack's assets for months."

I opened the folder to find detailed reports on the Moonveil Pack's territorial holdings, business connections, and wealth. Maps marked with potential development sites. Financial statements. Even a family tree with my father's bloodline highlighted.

"How did you get these?" I asked, flipping through pages of Benedict's handwriting.

"His laptop," Sarah replied with a satisfied smile. "He left it unlocked at the gallery last week. Our tech specialist copied everything."

I traced my finger over a particularly detailed map of our northern territories—land rich in natural resources that several development companies had been eyeing for years.

"He's not interested in Layla," I murmured. "He wants our land."

"Or our connections," Sarah added. "The Moonveil name opens doors even your father doesn't fully utilize."

I closed the folder, my mind racing with possibilities. "Keep monitoring him. I want to know every move he makes."

---

The next morning, I was summoned to the pack council chamber. Beta Anna Johnson stood with the elders, her smile too sweet to be genuine.

"Alpha Elaina," she greeted me with a slight bow that didn't reach her eyes. "We've been discussing the pack's future."

I took my seat at the circular table, noting how the elders avoided my gaze. "And what conclusions have you reached?"

"We believe an alliance with the Shadowcrest Pack would strengthen our position," Anna said smoothly. "Alpha Marcus Blackwood has expressed interest in a mating alliance."

The elders nodded in agreement, though I caught David Morrison's momentary hesitation.

"A strategic mating," I repeated, letting the words hang in the air. "With Alpha Blackwood."

"Yes," Anna continued, her voice honeyed with false concern. "Your return has... destabilized certain elements within the pack. This alliance would help control your dangerous ambitions while securing our future."

I leaned forward, letting my silver-blue eyes flash. "And what exactly are my dangerous ambitions, Beta Johnson?"

She faltered for just a moment before recovering. "Nothing specific, of course. But an unmated Alpha female with your... history... could attract unwanted attention."

I smiled thinly, recognizing the threat beneath her words. She wasn't proposing an alliance—she was suggesting a convenient way to remove me as a threat to her own power grab.

"How thoughtful of you," I said softly, "to concern yourself with my future."

As I left the council chamber, I caught sight of Benedict entering the building, his eyes fixed on me with newfound interest. He'd finally recognized something familiar in my face.

Too late, I thought. You should have looked closer when you had the chance.
