Chapter 3

My wolf was still snarling beneath my skin when I forced out the words that mattered most. "Where is Promise?"

Selena's cruel smile widened, and something cold settled in my stomach. The way her eyes lit up with malicious satisfaction told me everything I needed to know before she even opened her mouth.

"Your daughter?" She examined her perfectly manicured nails with theatrical indifference. "She's being disciplined in the basement. The little brat had the audacity to disrespect the new Luna. Can you imagine?"

The world tilted. My maternal instincts roared to life, drowning out every strategic thought I'd been carefully constructing. Promise. My baby. In the basement like a common prisoner.

"What did you do to her?" The words came out as a growl, my Alpha aura flaring so violently that several pack members stumbled backward.

Selena's laugh was like broken glass. "I taught her some manners. Something you clearly failed to do before abandoning her for your little diplomatic adventure. A proper Luna knows how to handle disrespectful children."

My wolf surged forward, demanding blood, demanding I tear this omega's throat out for daring to touch my child. But before I could move, Jake stepped between us, his face a mask of reluctant duty.

"Alpha Sierra," he said, his voice strained with the conflict between his wolf's loyalty and whatever hold Selena had over him. "I think... I think you need to calm down."

Calm down? My daughter was locked in a basement by this usurper, and he wanted me to calm down?

"Get out of my way, Jake." My voice carried the full weight of Alpha command, the tone that had never failed to compel immediate obedience.

But Jake's jaw tightened, and he didn't move. The betrayal cut deeper than Derrick's affair, deeper than Selena's theft of my position. This man had sworn to protect my family, and now he stood between me and my daughter.

"I'm sorry," he whispered, and I could smell his shame, his self-loathing. "But Luna Selena's orders are clear. You're not... you're not welcome here anymore."

Selena clapped her hands together with mock delight. "Oh, this is perfect. Jake, be a dear and escort our former Alpha to join her daughter. I'm sure they have so much catching up to do."

The two security wolves flanking Jake moved forward reluctantly, their eyes fixed on the floor. These men had once been willing to die for me, and now they were Selena's puppets.

"Don't do this," I warned them, my Alpha aura pressing down like a physical weight. "Remember your oaths. Remember who you serve."

One of them—Marcus, a young wolf I'd personally trained—looked up with tears in his eyes. "I'm sorry, Alpha. I'm so sorry."

They grabbed my arms with gentle but firm grips, their touch burning with the wrongness of it all. My wolf raged against the restraint, but I couldn't fight them without seriously injuring men who were clearly acting against their nature.

As they forced me toward the basement stairs, Selena's voice followed us, dripping with false sympathy. "Don't worry, Sierra. I'm sure you and Promise will be very comfortable down there. Just like the family reunion you've been missing."

The basement door slammed shut behind us with a finality that echoed through my bones. The lock clicked into place, sealing me in the cold, damp darkness below my own home.

My eyes adjusted quickly to the dim light filtering through a single barred window. The basement had been converted into a makeshift prison—bare concrete walls, a single bulb hanging from the ceiling, and the musty smell of neglect and fear.

And there, huddled in the far corner on a thin mattress, was my daughter.

"Promise?" My voice broke on her name.

She looked up, and my heart shattered. Dark bruises marked her pale arms, and her left cheek bore the fading yellow of an old injury. Her clothes—once bright and cheerful—were dirty and torn. But it was her eyes that destroyed me. The spark of childhood joy I remembered was gone, replaced by a wariness that no child should ever carry.

"Mama?" she whispered, as if she couldn't believe I was real.

I crossed the space between us in three strides, dropping to my knees and pulling her into my arms. She was so thin, so fragile, nothing like the healthy child I'd left behind.

"I'm here, baby. Mama's here." My voice shook with barely contained rage as I catalogued every mark, every sign of systematic abuse. "I'm so sorry I wasn't here to protect you."

Promise buried her face against my neck, her small body trembling. "She said you weren't coming back. She said you didn't want me anymore."

My maternal wolf howled with fury so pure it threatened to consume everything in its path. Selena hadn't just stolen my position—she'd tortured my child, broken her spirit, made her believe she was unloved.

The omega had made a fatal mistake. She'd awakened something in me that no amount of strategy or politics could contain.

She'd threatened my cub.
