Chapter 2

Khloe was someone Alpha David had encountered during one of his patrol missions along the pack borders.

At first, Sasha had no knowledge of this. It was only when one of the neighboring pack’s Lunas mentioned seeing the Alpha assisting a woman at the pack clinic that Sasha’s suspicions were aroused. The two seemed unusually close, the Luna had remarked.

Sasha didn’t want to believe that her mate could act in such a manner. More importantly, she trusted the bond they shared. Yet, her doubts festered until she visited the clinic herself and witnessed Alpha David carefully tending to Khloe. To her dismay, Sasha recognized Khloe as the girl from one of David’s treasured childhood photos.

“Alpha, what is this?” Sasha demanded, hurling the honey cakes she’d brought for him across the room.

Before David could respond, Khloe clutched her head and let out a piercing scream, “Don’t hit me! I won’t do it again, please don’t hurt me!”

Sasha froze, shocked by the outburst.

Alpha David swiftly pushed Sasha aside and knelt beside Khloe, his voice soft but commanding. “You’re safe now. No one will hurt you here.”

“Alpha!” Sasha shouted, her voice trembling with anger.

David turned to her, his gaze cold and unyielding—a look Sasha had never seen from him before, as if she had committed an unforgivable transgression.

“The patient needs rest. Leave,” he ordered, his Alpha tone leaving no room for argument.

Sasha clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms, before storming out of the room. She lingered nearby, hoping David would come out to explain, but he never did. Furious and hurt, she returned to their den.

To her astonishment, Alpha David later brought Khloe to their home.

“Why is she here?” Sasha blocked the doorway, her voice firm.

David’s brow furrowed. “Khloe needs a stable environment to heal.”

“Then let her stay at the clinic,” Sasha retorted.

Alpha David didn’t offer further explanation, gently moving Sasha aside and guiding Khloe into the den. The whispers and curious glances from nearby pack members made Sasha’s cheeks burn with humiliation.

Once inside, Sasha discovered that David had given Khloe a luxurious gown, one that seemed more fitting for a Luna than a guest. The sight of it made Sasha’s chest tighten as she retreated to their bedroom, tears stinging her eyes.

Hours later, David finally entered the room to offer an explanation.

“Khloe and I grew up in the same pack. She was taken by rogues during a border skirmish and sold into servitude. She’s suffered greatly over the years, forced into mating bonds she never wanted. When I found her during patrol, she recognized me immediately.”

Sasha felt a pang of sympathy for Khloe’s tragic past, though her unease remained.

“She has no pack, no family left, and only trusts me,” David continued. “I wanted to bring her here to ensure her safety, but I hadn’t yet discussed it with you.”

“Then let her stay,” Sasha reluctantly agreed. She wasn’t heartless.

David’s honesty suggested there was nothing untoward between him and Khloe. Yet, Khloe’s constant presence unnerved Sasha, especially when Khloe would knock on their door in the middle of the night, claiming she was terrified and couldn’t sleep.

David would go to comfort her, often not returning until Sasha had fallen asleep.

One night, Sasha forced herself to stay awake until David returned.

“You’re the Alpha,” she said, her voice firm but tinged with hurt. “Visiting Khloe’s room in the middle of the night isn’t appropriate. The pack will talk.”

“I’ve been honest with you,” David replied, his tone icy. “There’s nothing improper between Khloe and me.”

It was the first time Sasha had seen such a cold expression on David’s face, and it kept her awake long after he’d fallen asleep.

The next day, while returning from the pack market, Sasha found their den filled with smoke, surrounded by curious onlookers. A neighboring Delta informed her that Khloe had been injured and taken to the clinic.

Sasha rushed over, relieved to find that Khloe had only inhaled some smoke and sustained a minor cut on her hand.

“You don’t cook, yet you let Khloe handle the chores? Remember your role as Luna; don’t treat her like a servant,” David abruptly scolded, catching Sasha off guard.

When had she ever asked Khloe to work for her?

Sasha threw her shopping basket to the ground and snapped, “So what if she helps with chores? She’s not helpless, surely she doesn’t plan to freeload forever?”

Even Sasha had learned to cook, clean, and tend to the pack’s gardens in recent months.

Before David could respond, Khloe burst into tears, clinging to his arm.

“Please, Alpha, don’t blame Sasha. I wanted to help. You’ve done so much for me already; I can’t freeload forever.”

“Who says you’re freeloading?” David replied, his voice softening. “You’re like a sister to me. It’s only natural I take care of you.”

His tone hardened as he turned back to Sasha. “Don’t defend her. She’s acting like a spoiled pup.”

Seeing them so in sync, Sasha felt invisible.

Listening to David’s accusations, Sasha’s heart grew colder.

The next day, rumors spread through the pack that Sasha had mistreated Khloe, and even her past as a Beta was dragged into the gossip. The whispers followed her wherever she went, each word a reminder of the growing distance between her and her mate.
