Chapter 3

My hands shook as I rifled through Axl's belongings back in our cabin, water still dripping from my hair onto the Persian rug. The mechanical heart in my chest wheezed with each labored breath, its rhythm erratic from the trauma of my forced dive. I had to find something—anything—to prove what I'd seen in that video.

Axl was still on deck with Aliya, playing the devoted brother-in-law while she milked every ounce of sympathy from the gathered crowd. The ship's doctor had insisted I needed immediate medical attention, but Axl had waved him off, claiming I was "just being dramatic."

I pulled open his laptop, my fingers trembling as I navigated to his email. What I found made my blood run cold.

Folders labeled "Katherine's Affairs" and "Legal Evidence" sat prominently in his files. Inside were dozens of fabricated love letters, supposedly written by me to someone named "David." The handwriting was a perfect forgery of mine—Aliya's work, no doubt. Photos showed me embracing a man I'd never seen before, my face expertly photoshopped onto another woman's body.

But it was the Henderson Corporation files that made me gasp. Confidential merger documents, client lists, financial projections—all accessed through Axl's login, all recently viewed. Aliya hadn't just been seducing my husband; she'd been systematically stealing his company's secrets.

"My God," I whispered, downloading everything onto a flash drive. "She's been planning this for months."

Footsteps echoed in the hallway. I slammed the laptop shut just as Axl entered, his arm protectively around Aliya's shoulders. She looked perfectly composed now, her tears conveniently dried.

"What are you doing?" Axl's voice was sharp, suspicious.

"Looking for answers," I said, clutching my phone. "Axl, you need to see this video. It shows everything—"

"I don't need to see anything!" He cut me off, his face flushing with anger. "You attacked Aliya out of jealousy, and now you're trying to cover it up with some fabricated evidence?"

"It's not fabricated!" I thrust the phone toward him, but he knocked it aside, sending it skittering across the floor.

Aliya stepped forward, her voice trembling with false vulnerability. "Katherine, I know you're hurting, but this has to stop. Axl told me about your plans."

"What plans?" I stared at her in disbelief.

"To leave him," she said softly. "To take half his fortune and disappear. He showed me the legal documents you've been hiding."

From her purse, she produced a manila folder. Inside were divorce papers with my forged signature, financial statements showing hidden accounts I'd never opened, and a letter supposedly written by me detailing my "escape plan."

"This is insane," I breathed. "Axl, you can't believe this. These are all fake—"

"Are they?" His voice was cold, distant. "You've been different lately, Katherine. Distant. Secretive. Always on your phone."

"Because I was planning our anniversary surprise!" I screamed, my mechanical heart stuttering dangerously. "I've been working with the cruise director to arrange—"

"Enough!" Axl's shout echoed through the cabin. "I'm tired of your lies, your manipulations. Aliya warned me this might happen."

I looked between them, seeing the trap closing around me. Every move had been calculated, every piece of evidence planted with surgical precision. Aliya smiled at me over Axl's shoulder—a cold, triumphant expression that lasted only a second before melting back into wounded innocence.

"She's been poisoning your mind," I whispered. "Can't you see that?"

But Axl had already turned away, his arm tightening around Aliya as she buried her face in his chest with a perfectly timed sob.

A commotion outside our balcony caught my attention. Through the glass doors, I could see crew members pointing toward the dock. A sleek black sedan had pulled up to the gangway, and a tall figure in a dark coat was striding up the ramp with purpose.

My heart—what was left of it—skipped. Even from this distance, I recognized that confident stride, the way he moved with quiet determination. Simon Wallace. But what was he doing here?

"Who is that?" Aliya's voice had lost its tremor, sharp with sudden concern as she followed my gaze.

Through the cabin's speakers, the captain's voice crackled: "Mr. Wallace to the medical bay. Mr. Simon Wallace to the medical bay immediately."

Axl frowned, his grip on Aliya loosening slightly. "Wallace? Why does that name sound familiar?"

I pressed my hand to my chest, feeling the mechanical heart's irregular rhythm, and for the first time in hours, felt a flicker of hope.
