Chapter 2

Pain was the first thing I registered—sharp, consuming pain that radiated through every inch of my body. The rogues had left me broken and bleeding on the forest floor, my hand still protectively curled around my stomach. I'd lost consciousness after the third kick to my ribs, my wolf retreating deep inside to protect our pup.

I didn't know how long I'd been lying there before I felt it—gentle hands lifting me with infinite care, as if I were made of glass.

"Stay with me," a deep voice commanded, vibrating with authority. "I've got you now."

My eyelids fluttered open to see the most striking face I'd ever encountered—sharp jawline, intense dark eyes filled with concern, and an aura of power that made even Nolan's seem pale in comparison.

"Alpha," I whispered, recognizing the unmistakable energy signature.

"I'm Luis Hunter," he confirmed, his arms tightening around me as he cradled me against his chest. "Blood River Pack."

The moment our skin made full contact, something electric surged between us—a jolt so powerful it arched my back despite my injuries. Luis froze, his eyes widening as they locked with mine.

"The Moon Goddess," he breathed, his voice filled with wonder.

I knew instantly what had happened. The fated mate bond—the one true connection every werewolf dreamed of but few ever found. It had snapped into place between us with undeniable force.

"This is pack territory," I managed to say weakly. "You shouldn't be here."

"I was patrolling our border when I caught your scent—blood and fear." His jaw tightened. "I'm taking you to my pack hospital. Your injuries are too severe to wait."

"But the laws—"

"Mean nothing compared to saving a life," he cut me off, already moving swiftly through the trees. "Hold on, Elena."

He knew my name. Of course he did—the mate bond would have told him everything.

---

I woke to sterile white walls and the soft beeping of monitors. For one terrifying moment, I thought I'd lost everything—my pup, my future, my very self.

"The baby?" I gasped, bolting upright despite the pain.

A gentle hand pressed me back down. "Is safe," assured a female voice with a slight accent. "Strong heartbeat, no complications."

Dr. Sarah Chen smiled at me from beside the bed, her kind eyes crinkling at the corners. "Alpha Luis brought you in last night. You have three broken ribs, a concussion, and significant blood loss. But your little one held on."

Tears spilled down my cheeks. "Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet," she said, checking my vitals. "The next few days will be critical for both of you."

The door opened, and Luis entered. Even in simple jeans and a t-shirt, he radiated power—but there was something else too, something that made my wolf stir with recognition.

"How are you feeling?" he asked, approaching slowly as if afraid I might bolt.

"Like I was attacked by rogues and abandoned by my mate," I admitted, then winced at how bitter that sounded.

His eyes flashed with something dangerous. "Your mate abandoned you?"

"When rogues attacked, he ordered his warriors to protect another woman," I explained, my voice hollow. "He left me to die."

Luis's expression darkened, but he simply nodded. "You're safe now."

Over the following weeks, Luis visited daily—never pushing, never demanding, just sitting quietly beside my bed as I healed. He brought me books, answered my questions about his pack, and asked none about my past that might cause pain.

When I finally left the hospital, he offered me a cabin on pack lands—"for as long as you need," he said. "No strings attached."

I accepted, and over the next few months, something unexpected happened. Luis courted me with a patience and respect Nolan never showed—taking walks with me, teaching me about pack customs, listening to my fears about motherhood.

When Chance was born, Luis was there—not as an Alpha, but as a friend who had earned his place in our small circle.

---

Two years later, I stood on the balcony of the Blood River Pack house, watching the sunset paint the mountains gold. The mark on my neck—Luis's mark—tingled pleasantly as I sensed him approaching.

"Mommy! Look what I can do!" Chance's excited voice drew my attention to the yard below.

Our son—a beautiful blend of my features and Nolan's dark hair—concentrated intensely before his form shimmered and shifted. Where a toddler had stood moments before, a small wolf pup with unusual silver-tipped fur now played.

"Good job, buddy!" I called down, pride swelling in my chest.

Luis's arms encircled my waist from behind. "He's getting stronger every day."

I leaned back against my mate's solid chest, marveling at how far I'd come from that broken she-wolf left to die in the forest. Now I was Luna of the Blood River Pack, respected and loved, raising a powerful pup with an Alpha who treasured us both.

"Alpha Nolan and Hazel are back in Silver Moon territory," Luis murmured against my hair. "They crossed our borders yesterday."

I stiffened, my wolf growling low in my throat. After two years of peace, the past had finally caught up with us.

"They're heading this way," Luis continued, his voice deceptively calm. "And they're asking about Chance."
