Chapter 2
Madeleine's divorce from Kieran was a messy ordeal.
He cheated on her with an intern from his company, and Madeleine caught them red-handed. She took several incriminating photos and plastered them throughout his workplace and neighborhood, ensuring he became the subject of gossip. In revenge, Kieran reported her to the authorities, which resulted in Madeleine spending a week in jail. His parents even showed up outside Kamila and James Murphy's apartment with a loudspeaker, hurling insults, which sent her parents’ blood pressure soaring, nearly landing them in the hospital.
The animosity between the families was palpable, and now seeing Kieran in such a pathetic state brought a smirk to Madeleine's face. Ignoring his dark expression, she settled into the chair beside his bed, offering false comfort, "Don't worry, I spoke with the doctor. Your leg will heal in a few months. It might be a bit crooked, but it won't affect your walking."
"And if it does, no problem—I’ll get you a stylish cane!"
Kieran’s forehead veins pulsed, his jaw clenched as he retorted, "Thanks a lot."
Madeleine delighted in his frustrated expression, her laughter ringing louder, "No need to be so appreciative."
Her gaze drifted downwards, and she suddenly recalled an article she'd read online. She whipped out her phone, quickly typing a few words, then thrust the screen in his face. "Modern medicine is quite advanced. They can even do transplants on certain... parts. Look, there are quite a few successful cases!"
"Hey, if someone generously donates theirs posthumously, you won't have to be any less of a man!"
Kieran's eyes blazed with anger, his voice cracking, "Madeleine Webb! Get out!"
He was so agitated that he spat as he spoke, prompting her to step back quickly. "I’m just trying to be supportive. You're so ungrateful!"
"Kieran, think about this—one house and half a million dollars, and I’ll give you a child."
His face contorted as he slapped the bed's frame, yelling, "Enough is enough!"
She raised an eyebrow, reminding him, "We still have some frozen embryos from the IVF treatment."
He froze, staring at her in disbelief. Moments later, a look of excited realization crossed his face.
Kieran's voice trembled with excitement, "Good, great! I'll transfer the money right away!"
Reaching for his phone, he was interrupted when someone burst through the hospital room door. It was his mistress, Aaliyah Mendez.
Holding an ultrasound report, she shot Madeleine a glance, triumphantly announcing, "I'm pregnant!"
