Chapter 3

The grand banquet hall of the Alpha King's palace glittered under massive crystal chandeliers, their light competing with the silver moonbeams that streamed through towering windows. I stood near a column, a glass of untouched champagne in my hand, watching the gathering of the most powerful werewolves in the country. My diplomatic robes felt heavier with each passing hour.

Sarah whimpered inside me. *This is wrong. We shouldn't be here.*

*We have no choice,* I reminded her, though the words rang hollow even in my own mind.

Across the room, Ryan conversed with a group of Alphas, his posture relaxed, as if he hadn't just offered his Luna as a bargaining chip. Our eyes met briefly, and he gave me a pointed look before glancing toward Alpha King Theron, who stood surrounded by his advisors.

The message was clear: It was time.

I took a deep breath, allowing my Luna aura to soften and expand subtly. Not enough to challenge any of the she-wolves present, but enough to be noticed. As I made my way through the crowd, I carefully steered conversations toward pack unity and mutual protection, dropping subtle insights about territorial management that made even hardened Alphas pause and reconsider their positions.

"Your perspective is... refreshing, Luna Chloe," remarked an Elder Alpha, his eyebrows raised in surprise.

I smiled, the diplomat's mask firmly in place. "The strongest alliances are built on mutual benefit, not just power."

I felt him before I saw him—the overwhelming presence of Alpha King Theron approaching from behind. The conversation around me hushed as he joined our circle.

"I find myself intrigued by your diplomatic approach," he said, his deep voice sending involuntary shivers down my spine. The pine scent Ryan had insisted I wear seemed to catch his attention, his nostrils flaring slightly.

"Perhaps we might continue this discussion somewhere less crowded, Your Majesty?" I suggested, hating how steady my voice sounded when inside, Sarah was howling in distress.

The private audience chamber was intimate compared to the grand hall, with a small fireplace casting warm light over comfortable seating. I moved with practiced grace, preparing a tea service that had been arranged on a side table.

"You surprise me, Luna of Moonstone," Theron said, watching me with those penetrating eyes. "Most who seek my favor come with displays of strength or wealth."

I added a pinch of lavender to the steeping tea, its calming scent rising with the steam. "Sometimes the greatest strength lies in knowing when not to display it."

A smile tugged at his lips. "Wisdom from one so young."

"Age doesn't always equal wisdom, Your Majesty," I replied, extending the cup toward him.

As our fingers brushed during the exchange, an electric current shot through me. My hand trembled, nearly spilling the tea. Sarah suddenly went still inside me, her distress transforming into something else—recognition.

*No,* I thought desperately. *This can't be happening.*

Theron's eyes widened slightly, and I knew he'd felt it too—that impossible spark of mate-attraction. Not the deep bond I shared with Ryan, but something primal and undeniable.

"You're mated," he stated, his voice low and dangerous. "Yet I sense..."

"A temporary separation," I managed, the words like acid on my tongue. "For the good of my pack."

Something dark passed over his features. "Your Alpha sent you here knowing this might happen?"

I couldn't answer, shame and confusion warring within me. Sarah whimpered, torn between her loyalty to our mate bond with Ryan and this new, unexpected pull.

Theron set down his cup with deliberate care. "Tell me what your pack truly seeks, Luna Chloe. No diplomatic veils between us now."

The truth spilled from me then—the threat from neighboring packs, our vulnerable position, Ryan's desperate plan. With each word, Theron's expression grew more grave.

When I finished, he was silent for a long moment. Then, "Your sacrifice has moved me, Luna of Moonstone. Few would risk their mate bond for their pack's survival."

The next morning, before the assembled court, Alpha King Theron proclaimed a binding alliance with the Moonstone Pack. His voice rang with authority as he detailed the terms of protection and mutual aid, sealing our pack's safety with his royal decree.

I should have felt triumph. Instead, as Ryan's hand closed possessively around mine, all I tasted was ash.

"You've done well," he whispered, but his eyes held something I couldn't read—something that made Sarah growl in warning.

As we prepared to depart, Alpha King Theron approached me one final time, his voice pitched for my ears alone.

"What happens when a Luna discovers her Alpha is not worthy of her loyalty?" he asked, his gaze intense. "Remember this day, Chloe Matthews. Remember what was revealed here."

Before I could respond, he was gone, leaving me with a terrible suspicion forming in my heart—that the greatest betrayal was yet to come.
