Chapter 3

The parking garage beneath my office building was dimly lit, the fluorescent bulbs casting harsh shadows between the concrete pillars. I clutched my purse tighter as I walked toward my car, my heels echoing in the cavernous space. The day had been exhausting—another round of meetings where I'd had to force smiles while my world crumbled beneath me.

"Emily!"

I froze at the familiar voice, my blood turning to ice. Turning slowly, I saw Valery Woods approaching from behind a black sedan, her belly noticeably larger now, straining against a designer maternity dress I knew cost more than my monthly salary.

"What a coincidence running into you here," she said, her voice dripping with false sweetness. Her hand rested possessively on her rounded stomach, stroking it in slow, deliberate circles. "I was just in the neighborhood."

My neighborhood. My workplace. Nothing about this was coincidental.

"Valery." I kept my voice steady, though my heart hammered against my ribs. "What do you want?"

Her smile widened, predatory and cold. "Oh, I just wanted to thank you. Damian has been so wonderful to me lately. So attentive, so caring." She paused, letting the words sink in like poison. "He's going to be such an amazing father."

The words hit me like physical blows. I turned away, desperate to escape, but she followed me toward my car, her heels clicking against the concrete in a rhythm that matched my racing pulse.

"You know," she continued conversationally, "he tells me everything. About how difficult you've been lately. How you've been making his life so complicated with your jealousy and paranoia."

I reached my car and fumbled for my keys, my hands shaking. "Stay away from me, Valery."

"But we're going to be family soon, aren't we?" Her laugh was light, musical, and utterly chilling. "When Damian finally works up the courage to leave you for good."

I spun around, anger flaring hot in my chest. "He's never going to leave me for you. You're just his—"

"His what?" Her eyes glittered dangerously. "His baby mama? The mother of his child? The woman he actually loves?"

Before I could respond, she stepped closer, pulling a large cup from behind her back—one of those oversized drinks from the coffee shop across the street. The condensation on the plastic told me it was ice-cold.

"You know what, Emily?" Her voice dropped to a whisper. "You need to cool off."

The ice water hit my face like a slap, shocking and brutal. It soaked through my blouse, dripped from my hair, and pooled at my feet. I gasped, sputtering, as the cold seeped into my bones. The shock was so complete that for a moment, I couldn't move, couldn't breathe, couldn't think.

Valery's laughter echoed through the garage, high and manic. "Oops! How clumsy of me!" She dropped the empty cup at my feet and took a step back, admiring her handiwork. "You should be more careful, Emily. Accidents happen all the time."

She turned and walked away, her heels clicking cheerfully as though nothing had happened. I stood there, dripping and humiliated, my carefully applied makeup running down my cheeks in dark streams.

That evening, I waited until Damian left for his "business dinner"—another lie, I was certain—before slipping into his home office. My clothes were still damp from Valery's attack, my hair stringy and lifeless despite my attempts to fix it. The humiliation burned in my chest, but beneath it, something else grew: determination.

I needed proof. Real, concrete evidence of what he was doing.

His desk drawers were usually locked, but tonight I found one slightly ajar. Inside, tucked beneath a stack of client files, were bank statements I'd never seen before. My hands trembled as I pulled them out, scanning the transactions with growing horror.

Large cash withdrawals. Monthly transfers to an account I didn't recognize. Payments to "Riverside Luxury Apartments"—amounts that made my stomach lurch. Five thousand a month. More than our mortgage.

I dug deeper, finding a lease agreement with Damian's name listed as co-tenant alongside Valery's. The apartment was in Riverside Heights, the most expensive part of the city. I'd driven through that neighborhood once, admiring the gleaming high-rises and manicured gardens, never imagining my fiancé was keeping his mistress there.

The joint bank account statements were the final blow. Opened three months ago, with both their names. Deposits that matched the withdrawals from our shared account—money I'd thought was going toward our wedding, our future home, our life together.

He'd been stealing from us to fund his affair.

I photographed everything with shaking fingers, the evidence of his betrayal glowing on my phone screen. The baby fluttered in my stomach, and I pressed my hand there protectively.

"He's been lying about everything," I whispered to the empty room. "But not anymore."

The sound of his car in the driveway sent me scrambling to replace the documents exactly as I'd found them. By the time he walked through the front door, I was sitting on the couch with a book, my face carefully neutral.

"How was dinner?" I asked without looking up.

"Fine," he replied, his voice distracted. "Just boring client stuff."

Another lie. But now I had proof of so many others.
