Chapter 3

I woke to an empty bed and the hollow echo of my own breathing in the penthouse. The sheets on Alexander's side were cold—he hadn't come home last night. After the hospital, after losing our baby that he never knew existed, I'd returned to this gilded cage alone.

Sunlight streamed through floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the Manhattan skyline beyond—a view that had once taken my breath away but now felt like it was suffocating me. My body ached from the fall, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the hollow emptiness inside me.

I moved through our home like a ghost, trailing my fingers across the marble countertops and designer furniture that had never felt like mine. Seven years of living here, and there was barely a trace of me—no family photos, no personal mementos. Alexander had orchestrated our life to be easily erased if necessary.

And now I knew why.

In our bedroom closet—his side meticulously organized with custom suits and Italian shoes—I reached for the highest shelf where Alexander kept old files. My fingers brushed against something leather-bound and unfamiliar. Pulling it down, I discovered a worn journal I'd never seen before.

My hands trembled as I opened it, recognizing Alexander's precise handwriting immediately. The earliest entries dated back eight years—before we'd met.

*December 15 - The board is pressuring me about marriage. Eleanor insists a Sterling man needs a proper wife for appearances. Ridiculous old-fashioned nonsense, but the family trust terms are clear.*

I flipped forward, my heart pounding as I found an entry from shortly after we'd met.

*April 3 - Met an intriguing woman today. Sarah Mitchell. Smart, beautiful, efficient. Wharton MBA but working as an assistant. Could be useful. Not Sterling material though—no connections, no pedigree. Mother would never approve.*

My stomach clenched as I continued reading, each word slicing deeper than the last.

*May 20 - Sarah is becoming indispensable at the office. Considering a proposal of sorts—marriage would satisfy the trust requirements, but kept private, it needn't interfere with my public life or future options. She's clearly infatuated. Should be simple enough.*

The journal slipped from my fingers, landing with a soft thud on the plush carpet. I'd been a business transaction. A convenient solution to a financial problem. Nothing more.

Hot tears spilled down my cheeks as seven years of devotion crystallized into something ugly and fraudulent. The secret ceremonies, the hidden rings, the promises whispered in darkness—all of it calculated, none of it real.

I picked up the journal again, forcing myself to read the final entries.

*March 10 - Victoria Kane is pregnant. Claims it's mine. Timing works. This complicates things with Sarah, but perhaps it's time to end that arrangement anyway. Victoria has the right background, the right connections. The board would approve.*

I closed the journal, a strange calm settling over me. The truth should have destroyed me, but instead, it was setting me free. For the first time in seven years, I saw Alexander clearly—not as the complex, powerful man I'd loved, but as the calculating, selfish creature he truly was.

Within an hour, I was sitting in a quiet corner of Pershing Square Café, my hands wrapped around a cooling cup of coffee as I waited. The woman who entered precisely at 10 AM was impossible to miss—Elaine Hoffman, Manhattan's most formidable divorce attorney, known for dismantling the fortunes of unfaithful husbands.

"Mrs. Sterling," she said quietly, sliding into the seat across from me. "Or do you prefer Mitchell in public?"

"You know who I am," I said, surprised.

"I make it my business to know things," she replied, her keen eyes assessing me. "What can I do for you?"

I slid a folder across the table. "I need to divorce my husband without him knowing until it's too late."

Elaine raised an eyebrow as she opened the folder, examining the scanned copy of our marriage certificate. Her expression hardened as I continued speaking, detailing the seven years of secrecy, the public humiliation, the violence, the miscarriage.

"He pushed you down stairs while you were pregnant," she repeated, her voice dangerously soft. "And he has no idea?"

"None," I confirmed. "And I want to keep it that way until everything is in place."

Something flashed in Elaine's eyes—recognition, perhaps, or determination. She closed the folder with decisive finality.

"I rarely take cases pro bono, Mrs. Sterling," she said. "But for you, I'll make an exception. What Alexander did to you—" She shook her head. "Some men deserve to lose everything."

The weight that had been crushing me since the baby shower lifted slightly. For the first time, I wasn't alone.

"Thank you," I whispered.

"Don't thank me yet," Elaine warned. "We need evidence. Lots of it. Can you get certified copies of your marriage license? Medical records?"

I nodded. "I'll get everything today."

"Good," she said, a predatory smile forming on her lips. "Then let's make Alexander Sterling regret the day he ever underestimated you."

As we parted ways outside the café, I felt something unfamiliar stirring inside me where grief and shock had reigned—the first dangerous flicker of vengeance.
