Chapter 2

The humiliation burned through me like acid, Victoria's words corroding what little composure I had left. My fingers trembled around the crystal pitcher as laughter rippled through the gathering. Five years of healing threatened to unravel in an instant under Ryan's cold, dismissive gaze.

Deep within me, my wolf—once broken but now stronger than ever—began to tremble. Not with fear, but with a rage so profound it shook my very core. She paced restlessly, hackles raised, her silver fur bristling as she sensed the danger in this toxic atmosphere.

*They have no idea who I am now. Who we are.*

My wolf threw her head back in a silent howl that resonated through my entire being. The sound never left my lips, but I felt it surge through our bond—our mate bond—stretching beyond the confines of this hall, beyond the mountains, seeking the one person who would answer.

*Alexander.*

The mind-link snapped into place with startling clarity, my distress flowing through it like a tidal wave. Three simple words carried on the current: *My Luna is in danger.*

Victoria stepped closer, her expensive perfume unable to mask the stench of her malice. "Perhaps you should serve us," she said, gesturing to her empty champagne flute. "It's all you're good for now, isn't it?"

Ryan's pack members snickered, and I saw several Alphas from neighboring territories watching with amused interest. The Beta whose uniform I'd splashed earlier smirked, clearly enjoying my public humiliation.

"I heard she couldn't even maintain her wolf after the rejection," someone whispered loudly enough for everyone to hear. "Pathetic."

I closed my eyes briefly, feeling the mate mark at the base of my neck warm against my skin. Alexander was coming. I just needed to endure a few moments more.

"Nothing to say for yourself?" Ryan taunted, his voice carrying that hint of Alpha command that once would have made me cower. Now, it merely washed over me like water off stone. "Still as weak as the day I rejected you."

The grand doors at the far end of the hall suddenly burst open with such force that the heavy oak panels slammed against the walls, the sound like a thunderclap in the crowded space. Conversation died instantly as a wave of pure, undiluted Alpha power flooded the room—no, not just Alpha power. *Lycan* power.

I didn't need to turn to know who had arrived. Every wolf in the room instinctively recognized the apex predator among them, their bodies responding before their minds could process what was happening. Heads lowered, necks bared in involuntary submission as the overwhelming aura pressed down upon them like a physical weight.

Alexander Blackwood strode into the hall, his presence commanding absolute attention. Six-foot-four of lethal grace, dressed in a tailored black suit that did nothing to disguise the raw power beneath. His raven hair framed features that could have been carved from marble—beautiful but utterly merciless as his molten gold eyes scanned the room with predatory focus.

The crowd parted before him like water breaking against stone. No one dared meet his gaze directly. Not even Ryan, whose face had drained of color as he struggled against the instinct to drop to his knees.

Alexander's eyes found mine across the room, and for a heartbeat, the ferocity in them softened. Then his gaze shifted to Ryan and Victoria, hardening into something that made even my wolf shiver.

He moved with terrifying purpose, crossing the distance between us in long, measured strides. The silence was absolute, broken only by the sound of his footsteps against the marble floor.

When he reached me, Alexander didn't hesitate. His arm wrapped possessively around my waist, pulling me against the solid warmth of his body. The crystal pitcher slipped from my fingers, forgotten as it shattered on the floor. No one moved to clean it up. No one dared move at all.

"My Luna," Alexander murmured, his deep voice carrying easily in the silent hall as he bent to press a gentle kiss to my temple. "Step back."

The tenderness in his touch contrasted sharply with the deadly intent radiating from him as he turned to face Ryan and Victoria, positioning his body slightly in front of mine—a clear statement of protection and possession that no wolf could misinterpret.

And in that moment, as realization dawned in Ryan's widening eyes, I knew the charade was over.

Chapter 3

The silence that followed Alexander's arrival was deafening. Every wolf in the grand hall remained frozen, caught between terror and awe as his overwhelming Lycan aura commanded their submission. I felt his arm tighten protectively around my waist, the warmth of his body against mine a stark contrast to the cold fear that had gripped me moments before.

Ryan stared at us, his face ashen as realization dawned in his eyes. The Alpha who had once rejected me—who had once declared me unworthy before an entire pack council—now stood paralyzed, his neck involuntarily bared to the true apex predator before him.

'You...' he choked out, his gaze darting between Alexander and me. 'You're his Luna?'

Alexander's lips curved into a smile that held no warmth. 'My mate,' he corrected, his deep voice carrying easily through the silent hall. 'Luna of the Royal Lycan Court.'

The whispers erupted immediately, spreading through the crowd like wildfire. I could hear my name repeated in hushed, shocked tones as pack members frantically connected through mind-links, sharing the revelation that the woman they'd just witnessed being humiliated was actually the highest-ranking female werewolf in North America.

Victoria's perfectly painted face contorted with disbelief and rage. 'This is impossible,' she hissed. 'She was rejected—broken—'

'Silence.' Alexander didn't raise his voice, but the single word carried the full weight of his Lycan authority. Victoria's mouth snapped shut, her body trembling with the effort to resist his command.

The Beta who had sneered at me earlier was the first to drop to his knees, his forehead nearly touching the marble floor. 'Luna Sophia,' he gasped, 'forgive my disrespect. I didn't know—'

Like dominoes falling, the others followed—Alphas and Betas who moments before had watched my humiliation with amusement now bowed deeply, murmuring apologies that reeked of fear rather than sincerity. My wolf purred with satisfaction at the sight, five years of pain finding some small measure of justice in their groveling.

Only Ryan remained standing, though his legs visibly shook with the effort. His eyes never left mine, filled with a complex mixture of shock, regret, and something else—something that made my wolf growl in warning.

Alexander stepped forward, positioning himself more firmly between Ryan and me. 'Let me make something perfectly clear,' he said, his voice deceptively soft yet carrying to every corner of the hall. 'Anyone who disrespects my Luna will answer to the Royal Lycan Court.'

The threat hung in the air, heavy and unmistakable. I watched as several Alphas swallowed nervously, no doubt recalling their own participation in the gossip and mockery.

'Now,' Alexander continued, turning to face me with a tenderness that contrasted sharply with the coldness he'd shown everyone else, 'shall we prepare for tonight's banquet, my love?'

I nodded, allowing him to guide me through the parting crowd. As we walked away, I felt Ryan's gaze burning into my back, but I didn't turn. He no longer deserved even that small acknowledgment.

---

The grand banquet that evening was a study in transformed dynamics. The same wolves who had laughed at my expense now hovered at the periphery of our table, desperate for even a moment of acknowledgment. Alexander remained at my side, his hand rarely leaving the small of my back, a constant reminder to everyone of exactly who I belonged to.

I had changed from my simple gray dress into a gown of midnight blue that Alexander had brought for me—royal colors that left no doubt about my status. The silver mate mark at the base of my neck gleamed proudly, no longer hidden.

We were midway through the main course when Victoria's voice cut through the polite conversation.

'She's bewitched him!' she declared, rising suddenly from her seat several tables away. Her face was flushed, whether from alcohol or rage I couldn't tell. 'The rejected wolf has used dark magic to trick the Lycan Prince!'

A shocked hush fell over the gathering. Even Ryan looked alarmed, reaching for Victoria's arm to pull her back down, but she shook him off violently.

'Everyone knows a rejected wolf is broken,' she continued, her voice rising hysterically. 'She couldn't possibly form another mate bond naturally. She's manipulated sacred pack law!'

Uneasy glances passed between the delegates. While no one dared openly agree with her, I could sense their uncertainty, the seed of doubt she was trying to plant.

Alexander's hand found mine under the table, squeezing gently. When I looked up at him, the molten gold of his eyes held a promise that sent a shiver down my spine.

This wasn't just about defending my honor anymore. This was about justice—and Victoria Sterling was about to learn exactly what happened when you accused the Luna of the Royal Lycan Court of dark magic.

My wolf smiled in anticipation.
