Chapter 3

I woke to the smell of smoke and the sound of shouting. Disoriented, I stumbled from my narrow bed in the servants' wing, my hand automatically reaching for the moon-daisy pendant at my throat.

"Fire! Fire in the kitchen!" someone yelled down the hallway.

I rushed toward the commotion, my heart pounding. The kitchen—where I'd spent countless hours preparing meals for pack gatherings—was filled with thick smoke. Pack members scrambled about, carrying water buckets and shouting orders.

"What happened?" I demanded, grabbing a passing Delta by the arm.

"Kitchen fire, Luna—I mean, Luciana." He couldn't meet my eyes. "Your quarters were damaged."

"My quarters?" Confusion washed over me. "I don't understand."

Georgina appeared beside me, her face a perfect mask of concern. "Oh, Luciana! I came as soon as I heard." Her hand rested lightly on my arm, her touch making my skin crawl. "They say it started near your old room."

As the smoke cleared, I pushed through the gathered pack members to see what remained of my personal belongings. Thirty years of memories—photographs, journals, gifts from Theodore—all reduced to ash and cinders.

"How convenient," I whispered, watching Georgina's reflection in the water bucket. Her lips curved into the slightest smile before she composed her features back into a mask of sympathy.

---

The whispers started the next day.

"I heard she threatened Delta Captain Sienna..."

"...said she'd make us all pay..."

"...seen talking to herself near the border..."

Each rumor more damaging than the last. Pack members who had once greeted me warmly now averted their eyes when I passed. Even Elena, my trusted Omega, seemed hesitant in my presence.

"Luna Luciana," she whispered when we were alone, "they're saying terrible things about you."

"I know." I straightened my shoulders. "And I need you to—"

A scream interrupted me—high-pitched and terrified. I rushed toward the sound, finding a small crowd gathered around young Omega Elena Torres.

"She attacked me!" Elena cried, pointing at me with a trembling finger. "I was just walking to the gardens, and she—she grabbed me and said I'd regret helping her!"

I stood frozen, at least ten feet from where Elena had been walking. "That's impossible. I've been in the library all morning."

But the damage was done. The pack members' eyes held suspicion and fear.

---

The pack meeting hall fell silent as Rex took the podium. My heart swelled with hope—surely he would defend me, tell the truth about Georgina's schemes.

"I have something to say," Rex announced, his voice stronger than I'd ever heard it. "About Luciana Cooper."

I leaned forward, my hands clasped tightly in my lap.

"For thirty years," he continued, "she pretended to be my mother."

The air left my lungs in a painful rush.

"She stole my childhood," Rex's voice cracked with emotion. "Kept me from my real mother while playing house with me as if I were some kind of doll."

Georgina stepped forward, placing a supportive hand on Rex's shoulder.

"I demand that this pack recognize Georgina Flores as my only mother," Rex declared, his eyes finding mine across the hall. "And that Luciana Cooper be stripped of any remaining authority."

The silence that followed was deafening. I sat motionless, unable to process the complete betrayal of the son I had raised, loved, and protected as my own.

---

"The evidence is clear," Cash announced to the assembled council. "Luciana Cooper has engaged in activities detrimental to pack unity and security."

He laid out document after document—each more damning than the last. Financial records showing embezzlement. Testimonies from pack members claiming threats and intimidation. Medical reports suggesting increasing instability.

"These are lies," I said quietly, my voice barely audible even to my own ears.

"Silence!" Cash's Alpha tone vibrated through the chamber.

Georgina stepped forward, her expression gentle. "Alpha Cash, if I may?" She waited for his nod before continuing. "I think we should consider mercy in this situation."

I looked up sharply, surprised by her apparent compassion.

"Exile is a merciful punishment," she continued sweetly, her eyes meeting mine with cold triumph. "Considering the deception she's perpetrated on this pack—on my son—she deserves much worse."

The council members murmured in agreement.

"Exile," Elder Marcus repeated thoughtfully. "To be stripped of pack protection and sent beyond our borders..."

I felt the walls closing in around me. After thirty years of service, of sacrifice, I was to be cast out like a rogue—homeless, packless, alone.

As Cash began outlining the details of my exile, I touched the moon-daisy pendant one last time. Theodore had once told me that even the humblest flower could survive the harshest conditions.

Perhaps it was time I remembered how to bloom in the dark.
