Chapter 9

Debra's POV:

The journey to the Black Moon Pack took the entire day. We drove through rolling hills and dense forests, the landscape changing as we ventured further into Ezekiel's territory. The air itself seemed to shift, growing crisper and wilder, charged with an ancient energy I had never felt before.

The car was silent for the first few hours. Vicky, exhausted from the emotional turmoil and the sleepless night, quickly dozed off, her head resting against the window. I was left alone with Ezekiel and my thoughts.

He didn't press me with questions. He simply sat beside me, his powerful presence a quiet comfort. He gave me the space I needed to process the monumental shift that had just occurred in my life.

Finally, as the afternoon sun cast long shadows through the trees, I broke the silence.

"What is your pack like?" I asked, my voice soft.

He turned to look at me, his silver eyes seeming to hold the wisdom of the ancient forests we were driving through. "It is different from Silver Ridge," he said. "My pack values strength, yes, but we also value loyalty and family above all else. We are warriors, but we are not cruel. We protect our own."

The unspoken contrast with my own pack hung in the air. He was telling me I would be safe.

"What will they think?" I asked, voicing the fear that had been lingering in the back of my mind. "Of you bringing home a she-wolf who isn't your true mate and declaring her your Luna?"

"They will think that their Alpha has made his choice," he said with unshakable confidence. "And they will respect it. My pack trusts my judgment. When they meet you, they will see what I see."

"And what is that?" I whispered, almost afraid to hear the answer.

"A survivor," he said, his gaze unwavering. "A she-wolf with the heart of a Luna, even if she doesn't know it yet. You stood up to two Alphas to defend your honor. That takes a courage many do not possess."

His words were a balm to my wounded soul. He saw me, truly saw me, in a way no one else had.

As dusk began to fall, we finally arrived. The pack house of the Black Moon Pack was nothing like the modern, opulent mansion I had grown up in. It was a magnificent, sprawling structure of dark timber and gray stone, built into the side of a mountain. It looked ancient, formidable, and deeply connected to the wild land around it. It looked like a fortress. It looked like a home.

When the car stopped, the large front doors opened. A man who looked to be in his late forties, with a kind face and a salt-and-pepper beard, walked out to greet us. The silver insignia on his collar marked him as the pack's Beta.

"Alpha," he said, bowing his head respectfully to Ezekiel. Then his eyes turned to me, filled with a gentle curiosity.

"Beta Marcus, this is Debra," Ezekiel said, his voice resonating with authority. He placed a hand on the small of my back, a simple gesture of possession and support. "My chosen mate and your future Luna."

There was no flicker of doubt in the Beta's eyes, only acceptance. He bowed his head to me. "Luna. Welcome to Black Moon."

The title felt foreign, a cloak that didn't fit. But as I looked at the Beta's welcoming face and felt the steady warmth of Ezekiel's hand on my back, I thought that maybe, just maybe, I could learn to wear it.

Ezekiel led us inside. The interior was just as impressive as the exterior, with a great hall warmed by a roaring fire, comfortable-looking furniture, and the scent of woodsmoke and roasting meat in the air. It felt lived-in, and welcoming.

"I've had guest quarters prepared for your maid," Ezekiel said to me. "And you will be staying in the Luna's suite. It adjoins my own."

My heart fluttered nervously at the implication.

He must have sensed my apprehension. "You will have your own space, your own privacy," he assured me gently. "I will not rush you, Debra. You need time to heal, to adjust. All I ask is that you give my pack—and me—a chance."

I looked up into his handsome face, into the silver eyes that held so much strength and an unexpected kindness. He had saved me from a terrible fate and asked for nothing in return but a chance.

"I will," I promised. And I meant it.
