Chapter 4

The ash coated my fingertips, soft as powdered snow. I pressed my palms against the hardwood, trying to gather the gray dust, but it slipped through the cracks of my trembling fingers. A jagged shard of painted blue porcelain bit deep into the heel of my hand. I didn't feel the sting. I only saw the crimson drop fall, blooming dark and wet against the pale gray of my mother's remains.

Then, the screech of tires tore through the living room.

The walls of the apartment violently peeled away. The polished hardwood warped into wet, slick asphalt. The heavy, suffocating scent of crushed metal and burning rubber swallowed the faint jasmine of my tea. Blinding halogen headlights pierced my retinas, turning the world into a glaring, washed-out nightmare. Shattering glass rained down around me, tinkling against the floor like morbid wind chimes.

"Mom," I whispered. My voice was a dry, scraping sound. I clawed at the floorboards, desperate to pull her from the phantom wreckage. The metallic tang of blood flooded the back of my throat. My spine seized, a white-hot spike of chronic agony radiating outward, but my mind was already gone, trapped ten years in the past.

"Dante, she's scaring me." Ember's voice filtered through the wail of nonexistent sirens, thin and quivering with manufactured terror. "Look at her eyes. She's completely lost it."

"Grace. Stop it. You're bleeding on the floor." Dante’s shadow fell over me, blocking the harsh light. But he didn't kneel. He didn't reach into the wreckage to pull me out.

The rest fragmented into a jagged, terrifying mosaic. The heavy boots of paramedics. A sudden, sharp pinch of a needle slipping into my arm. The rhythmic, hypnotic thud of tires on a highway heading north, carrying me further and further into the dark.

When the chemical fog finally thinned, the world was painted in a suffocating, sterile white. I sat on a perfectly made bed in a room that smelled of industrial bleach and lavender air freshener. It was an "exclusive residential sanctuary" in upstate New York, according to the glossy brochure resting on the nightstand. A gilded cage.

Dante stood by the heavy oak door, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his cashmere coat. He was already running his thumb over the screen of his phone inside his pocket. He couldn't meet my eyes.

"It's for your own good, Grace," he muttered, his gaze fixed on the reinforced window overlooking a manicured lawn. "You're not well. The hallucinations... the way you were acting. Ember doesn't feel safe. I don't feel safe. You need professional help."

The tug-of-war in his voice was pathetic. He wanted me to absolve him, to agree that locking me away was an act of love rather than convenience.

I stared at him, my hands wrapped in thick white gauze. "You're just throwing away the pieces you broke," I whispered, my voice hollow and raw.

His jaw tightened. A flash of genuine guilt crossed his features, but it wasn't strong enough to make him stay. He turned the handle. The heavy, metallic click of the deadbolt echoing in his wake was the sound of a ten-year marriage sealing its own coffin.

I don't know how many days bled together before the storm arrived.

The heavy door swung open, not with the cautious, patronizing click of a facility nurse, but with the violent force of a hurricane. Eleanor Bradley stood in the threshold. Her designer trench coat swept the floor, and her eyes blazed with an aristocratic fury that made the attending orderly shrink against the corridor wall.

"If you think," Eleanor's voice dropped to a lethal, vibrating register as she addressed an unseen administrator in the hall, "that my son's signature holds any weight while my legal team is breathing down your neck, you are sorely mistaken."

She crossed the room in three strides and sat on the edge of my bed. Her cool, dry hand enveloped my bandaged fingers. "I've got you, my sweet girl," she murmured, her free hand rising to touch the wedding ring at her throat. "He will never make another medical decision for you as long as I draw breath."

A man stepped into the room behind her.

He didn't wear the stiff, clinical white coat of the facility staff. He wore a tailored navy sweater, his posture relaxed but profoundly attentive. Behind wire-rimmed glasses, his eyes—a striking, storm-glass gray—locked onto mine. For a fraction of a second, a muscle feathered in his jaw, a microscopic crack in his professional armor.

"Grace," Eleanor said, her tone softening into something fiercely protective. "This is Dr. Holden Murray. I've brought him in from the city. He answers exclusively to me, and he is going to help you find your way back."

Dr. Murray stepped forward. He moved with a quiet, deliberate caution, making sure I could track his movements. He didn't crowd me. He stopped at a respectful distance, bringing with him the faint, clean scent of peppermint and rain. I noticed a small, faded scar on the back of his left hand as he adjusted his glasses.

"Hello, Grace," he said.

His voice was a low, resonant baritone, steady enough to anchor a sinking ship. He didn't look at me with the clinical detachment of the nurses, nor the disgusted pity Dante had shown. He looked at me as if he knew exactly how heavy the dark was, and he wasn't afraid to sit in it with me.

"We're going to take this one breath at a time," Holden said softly, his gaze never wavering.

For the first time since the urn had shattered, the phantom smell of burning rubber began to fade.
