Chapter 9

The next morning, the atmosphere in the Conway Media top-floor boardroom was suffocating.

Elena sat at the head of the massive mahogany table. Her face was an unreadable mask of ice as she stared at the giant flat-screen TV mounted on the wall.

On the screen, Darron was standing behind a podium, surrounded by a blinding storm of camera flashes. He looked pale and exhausted. He was reading the confession statement, his voice shaking as he publicly admitted to his infidelity and moral failures.

The C-suite executives sitting around the table were dead silent. No one dared to speak. The air in the room felt heavy, charged with a terrifying, unpredictable energy.

Elena picked up the remote and pressed the mute button. Darron's pathetic, crying face froze on the screen in total silence.

She slowly turned her head, her cold, dead eyes sweeping over the executives lining the table.

Thea stood right beside Elena's chair. She lifted a thick stack of termination letters and slammed them down onto the polished wood. The loud smack made several grown men flinch.

Elena's gaze locked onto the Chief Financial Officer. "Explain the thirty million dollar transfer to the shell company in Belize last quarter."

The CFO's face lost all its color. Sweat beaded on his upper lip. He opened his mouth, stammering out a string of complex financial jargon, desperately trying to confuse the issue.

Elena didn't let him finish. She picked up a heavy file folder and threw it directly at his face.

The folder hit his chest, bursting open. Bank statements stamped with official offshore seals fluttered through the air and scattered across the table. The sharp edge of one paper sliced across the CFO's cheek, leaving a thin line of red.

He stared at the papers, his psychological defenses completely shattering.

"You are fired, effective immediately," Elena stated, her voice devoid of any human empathy. "Legal is already drafting the embezzlement charges."

The boardroom erupted. The VP of Operations and the Head of Acquisitions jumped out of their chairs, their faces red with panic and anger.

"You can't do this!" the VP yelled, pointing a finger at her. "You're just using us as scapegoats to cover up your own PR mess!"

Elena didn't argue. She simply reached under the lip of the table and pressed the silent panic button, a direct line to the elite private security detail her late father had established for the family.

Exactly thirty seconds later, the heavy boardroom doors swung open. Four highly trained, imposing security specialists stepped into the room, their presence instantly suffocating the executives' outrage.

Before the two screaming executives could react, the guards grabbed them, twisting their arms painfully behind their backs and slamming their chests down onto the mahogany table.

Elena stood up. She walked slowly over to where the two men were pinned. She leaned down, bringing her lips close to their ears.

She whispered the exact dates, times, and locations of their secret meetings with Darron.

The fight instantly drained out of both men. Their faces turned ashen gray. They realized she knew everything. There was nowhere to hide.

Elena stood up straight and waved her hand dismissively.

The guards yanked the men off the table and escorted them out of the room with brutal efficiency. The CFO scrambled out behind them, terrified.

The remaining executives sat frozen in their chairs, their heads bowed, terrified to even make eye contact with Elena.

She walked back to the head of the table. She placed both hands flat on the wood. "Thea is now the acting Director of Public Relations. An internal audit starts in ten minutes. Anyone connected to those three men will be removed from this building by noon."

The purge was over in less than twenty minutes. The entire corporate structure had been violently brought to its knees.

The room emptied out. Elena stood alone, staring out the window at the Manhattan skyline.

Thea walked in quietly. "The market is reacting. Darron's apology and the executive purge stopped the bleeding. The stock is slowly creeping back up."

A genuine, sharp smile finally broke through the ice on Elena's face.

But she knew the war wasn't over. Haylee was still out there, hiding in the shadows, waiting to strike again.

Elena walked over to the coat rack and pulled on her trench coat. Her movements were sharp and decisive.

"Cancel my afternoon meetings," Elena told Thea. "I have a personal mess to clean up."

She grabbed the keys to her Porsche off the desk and walked out of the room, her heels clicking like a countdown.
